Home Gym vs. Health Club: "Which one do I chose?" Print E-mail

ImageDecisions, decisions, decisions!  We're all faced with them.  However, now you're about to make a very important decision regarding your long-term health.  Whether or not to exercise at home, to invest in a gym membership, or both.

Having done both in my life, I thought I'd give you some insight into some of the pros/cons of each, the options you have, and how to make the most of your decision so that you're as successful as possible.

I began my journey rather humbly.  My first experience stepping into a "gym" was at my high school when one of my friends (who was on the football team) invited me in to show me some exercises.  It was a bit intimidating at first, but everyone there was friendly, and I didn't feel overly self-conscious.  The biggest challenge for me was that I had very little control of the weights and when compared to the other guys in the gym, I was very weak.  I was 16 years old at the time, and our high school gym was primarily for our school's athletes.  Since there were no health clubs in my neighborhood, my only option was to get a weight set that I could use at home.

ImageWell, it's that time of year again.  New Year's Resolution season, with its hopes, dreams and promises.  Sadly, many of us will 'fizzle' long before we see the manifestation of our hard work.  Here's an article that hopefully will help you stay on track during this exciting, yet challenging time of the year.

As a manager of a large health club, I found it encouraging to see so many new members this time of year. Sadly, after about 2-3 weeks, many new members let excuses rob them of the opportunity to improve themselves.

Staying Motivated - "How Skippy Got His Groove Back" Print E-mail

ImageIt's happened to all of us at one time or another. You started off really excited about your weight training / exercise regimen. You'd go to the gym faithfully for days, weeks, months, even years, and then somehow... you don't know how or when, but you just lost the motivation. Your drive to get to the gym fizzled like a dying flame. Although the desire to get out and exercise was still faint within you, something seemingly insurmountable was keeping you trapped in a never ending spiral of non-activity. This is what happened to me a few years ago (2006). I never thought it would happen to me. I've seen it happen to my friends and family, but I never thought I'd have problems staying motivated. I've been consistently weight training since I was 17 years old. By the time I'd reached this 'slump', I'd been weight training for almost 22 years . I used to say to myself, 'Man, I'll never quit! I'll lift forever! It's in my blood!"
